Since its introduction in 1932, the Patek Philippe Calatrava has been a flagship model of the brand. The classic stainless steel cases and structured lines appeal most to watch lovers who love classic, elegant watches. Through the years, the collection has undergone several design updates. But always, it retains its sophisticated and minimalist style.

A Brief History of Patek Philippe

Patek Philippe’s rich history dates back to 1839, when Polish immigrant Antoine Norbert de Patek partnered with Polish watchmaker François Czapek to put up the company Patek, Czapek & Cie – Fabricants à Genève, Patek Philippe’s original name.

At first, the company was doing well, but just like every other business, there were bound to be challenges along the way. Eventually, there was an increased disagreement between the two partners.

Meanwhile, in 1844 at the French Industrial Exposition in Paris, Patek met French watchmaker Jean Adrien Philippe. During the exhibition, Patek’s eyes were caught by Philippe’s invention — a mechanism for winding a movement and setting the hands using a crown rather than a key.

So, when Patek ceased his partnership with Czapek, he decided to partner with Jean Adrien Philippe. Together, they found a third partner, Vincent Gostkowski, and continued the operations of the company under the new name Patek & Cie – Fabricants à Genève, which was later on renamed Patek, Philippe & Cie.

How the Patek Philippe Calatrava Came To Be

With Philippe’s ingenuity, the company embraced modern production processes. With Patek’s innovative marketing approach, the company managed to let the whole world know about their cutting-edge watches. And these watches were eventually — to this day — adored and became sought-after by many.

For years, the company prospered and has successfully carved a niche in the global watchmaking industry. That was until the US stock market crashed in 1929, which marked the Great Depression. With sales declining and debts owed to Patek not being paid, the company suffered losses. They either needed to close down or find a buyer.

That was when Charles Henri and Jean Stern of Stern Frères came to their rescue. Stern Frères was a watch dial-manufacturing company that supplied to Patek Philippe. In 1932, the brothers purchased a controlling interest in the company, and the first thing they did was put a new technical director in place, Jean Pfister.

With Pfister at the company’s helm, Patek Philippe started to operate using modern machinery. They also started making movement entirely in-house. Watch designs became simplified, prices were made accessible to many, and new collections and models were introduced.

With finances still not stable, the Stern brothers knew that they needed to launch a wristwatch that would appeal to the mainstream, and not just to the watch collectors. Hence the birth of the iconic Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 96 — Patek Philippe’s legendary flagship model.

The Importance of Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 96

Introduced in 1932, the first-ever Calatrava — Ref. 96 was first manufactured in steel. It featured a round case, minimalist dial, and a leather strap. Its dial only displayed baton hour markers, two hands, and a sub-dial for small seconds at 6 o’clock. Simply put, it was meant to do what watches were designed to do, to tell the time.

At first, it was powered by the JLC 12-ligne movement. But in 1934, the company decided to equip the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 96 with its new in-house calibre, the 12’’120. Since then, Patek Philippe would manufacture their own in-house movements for their wristwatches.

With its launch in 1934 up until 1939, Patek Philippe was able to introduce 10 new calibres. And so, coming from a rough beginning, the original Calatrava Ref.96, with its minimalist design and ‘time only’ function, managed to save the Patek Philippe company and introduced a new wristwatch design that would become a classic for decades to come — the dress watch.

What is a Dress Watch?

A dress watch is a simple and sophisticated timepiece that’s meant to be worn with formal wear without taking the attention away from your whole wardrobe. Ideally, it is designed to be worn with a suit or tuxedo for the gentlemen, or a gown or a cocktail dress for the ladies. So, a dress watch needs to be subtle and understated — not loud and complicated.

For men, a classic dress watch is typically flat and slim so it does not look bulky under a shirt cuff. The average size is between 34mm and 40mm, depending on the wrist of the wearer. Ideally, it has a high-quality leather strap to keep it luxurious yet understated.

In keeping with understated luxury, most often, a dress watch is made of precious metals, such as platinum and gold. Its dial is minimalistic with only the necessary hour markers, hands, and sometimes a date window adorning it. And to keep it simple, it is most often devoid of complications, featuring only its basic time-telling function.

True enough, the Patek Philippe Calatrava embodies all of the above descriptions of a classic dress watch.
