History of Panerai Radiomir Watches

Founded in the year 1860, in the Italian city, Florence, the Panerai is one of the renowned luxury watch brands. The foundations of this iconic watch brand were laid down by the talented, Giovanni Panerai. The Panerai made its debut with setting up a watchmaker's shop on Ponte alle Grazie in Florence. This was the city's first watchmaking school and workshop. Holding a legacy of successful 159 years, Panerai has kept its followers in a grip by surprising them with new inventions. Sticking firmly to its tagline of "Where ideas come to life" Panerai has left no stone unturned to make a name for itself.

Panerai has inked a beautiful history in the world of horology, traversing through various even and odds in its watchmaking journey. Before 1993, the company was involved in the manufacturing of precision instruments for the Royal Italian Navy. Until this time period it did not produce timepieces for commercial purpose. Even few watch models that it manufactured were only meant for professional use in the navy. Most of the Panerai watches, including the Panerai Radiomir, were exclusively produced for the Italian navy divers.

In the year 1936, Officine Panerai developed a prototype timepiece for the Royal Italian Navy, featuring a screw-down crown and water resistant case back. Soon after the completion of three years after this, the prototype was brought into production. Attributes of this diver watch such as optimal legibility under extreme conditions, due to the coating of a luminous zinc sulphate and radium bromide mesothorium suddenly took the attention of watch enthusiasts.

However, later the regime of the Panerai company was passed on to the founder's grandson, Guido Panerai. During his reigns, Guido(1873–1934) created a patent of luminous chemical mixture, under the head of Guido Panerai Radiomir. But unfortunately, he was unaware of the fact that these radium substances were highly toxic and dangerous due to being radioactive in nature. However, the current Panerai Radiomir models have undergone subsequent changes. And now they are made using completely safe Superluminova material. Design wise the new Panerai Radiomir models are highly reminiscent of the original military watches.

In 1993, Panerai positioned itself to make a public debut. And during this year Panerai released many luxury watch models such as the Panerai Luminor and Panerai Mare Nostrum for the watch enthusiasts. In a bid to expand its commercial space in the market, in 1997, Panerai launched a new Radiomir generation. Initially, these were produced in very limited numbers which were just 60 pieces for the platinum variant. Similar to its original models from 1930s, the new Panerai Radiomir PAM 210 was encapsulated in a case size of 47mm. Further, Panerai went on introducing new updations in the Panerai Radiomir series. As a result of this in subsequent years, newer versions of Radiomir with smaller case size were launched.
