All About Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Watches

History and Business of Jaquet Droz

Jaquet Droz is a Swiss watchmaking company currently under the Prestige and Luxury division of the Swatch Group. The company has been named after Pierre Jaquet Droz (1721-1790), who was a famous manufacturer of clocks, watches, and automatons. Automatons were mechanically driven shapes and characters.

Droz was almost killed for these machines for alleged witchcraft in them. The amazing thing is that these automatons are operational even today, and you can go and admire them at the Neuchâtel Museum of Art and History in Switzerland.

Jaquet Droz SA was a new company that existed in the 1950s, but it dissolved in the year 1963. Then the Coopérative de Fabricants Suisses d'Horlogerie shared this brand name in 1965 and sold Jaquet Droz watches across the world for around 20 years. Finally, it failed in the year 1983. 10 years later in 1993, Investcorp funded it and the brand was re-launched at the Basel Fair. However, this time, it had no relation with its former concerns. Yves Scherrer and Francois Bodet, who formerly owned the Breguet Group, bought the brand’s rights in 1995. Soon, they started producing replicas of automatons and then launched an upscale range of branded watches from Jaquet Droz.

In 1999, Cuopla Group infused its cash, thereby betraying the firm in a dire state. Finally, in 2000, Montres Jaquet-Droz SA was purchased by the Swatch Group, after which the company integrated Jaquet Droz watches into its luxury line of products and moved it to La Chaux-de-Fonds. Today, Jaquet Droz watches are an epitome of value, style, and limited editions. They are popular for their artistic features and embellished dials using the traditional enamel method of Grand Feu Noir Absolu.

There are several manufacturing sources from where Swatch Group draws Jaquet Droz including Manufacture Blancpain. According to Marc Hayek, the President of the company, Jaquet Droz manufactured 4000-5000 watches in 2013 alone.

The brand has several signature collections with unique looks and features. Some of their collections include Novelties, Grande Seconde, Automata, Ateliers D'Art, Petite Heure Minute, Lady 8, Astrale, and SW. If we talk about Petite Heure Minute, in particular, each piece in this collection defines creativity, excellence, and expertise. Their dials feature a unique play on minerals, materials and embellishments in a unique way never seen before.

Signature Style and Design Features of Jaquet Droz

Pierre Jaquet Droz got the passion and skill for making watches from his relatives and brought to life a range of timepieces. Even in the 1740s, the sophisticated movements of these watches were unlike any other clocks during that period. His passion for constructing handmade movements, serious craft approach, mechanical principles, and meticulous nature encouraged him to add music and movement to his automatons.

Every Jaquet Droz watch is an artwork in itself; and even today, Jaquet Droz luxury watches have the same inherited principles and values as before. The mesmerizing Petite Heure Minute collection is inspired by timeless jewellery. A perfect example would be the Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Relief Dragon model. It features a dial made of 18 karat red gold featuring black onyx and spiderman jasper.
