Rolex Sea Dweller corresponds to the highest level of waterproof performance of 3900 m. It is also said to be a high-tech divers watch in Rolex.
History of Rolex Sea Dweller
All the models of Rolex are Unbeatable when they are compared with each other. The Rolex Sea Dweller is considered to be a true tool watch. Its design is built specifically for the divers and it contains all the functions that an avid diver would require. Now although the Rolex Sea Dweller is not as popular as the Rolex Submariner, but it is a highly regarded watch.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea Dweller is a line of diver watches. It comes with an underwater diving depth which rates up to 610 meters, that is, 2,000 ft for the vintage models and for the Rolex Sea Dweller Deepsea model it rates up to 3,900 meters (12,800 ft).
The Sea Dweller was developed during the 1960s, and it was made for the requirement of professional divers who works at great depths. So keeping their needs in mind, the Rolex led to the development of its first 'ultra water resistant' tool watches. And it was designed for conducting safe diving operations at 300 m+ (1,000 ft+) depths.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea Dweller Submariner 2000ft (610 m), that was made available in 1967 was developed from the Submariner for the Comex S.A. (a company expert in engineering and deep diving operations) industrial deep-sea diving company by increasing the thickness of the crystal and this was produced in several variations. And it had a depth rating of 610 meters (2,000 ft) and its Rolex reference number is 1665.
Most of the Sea Dweller watches by Rolex are assimilated with a helium escape valve, which is meant for saturation diving. Although the early Sea Dweller did not always have the valve, until the introduction of the Rolex Sea Dweller 126600 in 2017. Now the Sea Dweller are also differentiated by the absence of the date magnifier, that is the Cyclops, which is present on most other Rolex models, as it was impossible to attach a cyclops with Ultraviolet (UV) light curing adhesive at the top of a watch crystal exposed to the pressure encountered at its test depth. And the watch range of the Sea Dweller has been a standard issue for the Comex divers since 1977.
The distinguished feature about the Sea Dweller Submariner 2000 watches is that they have two red text lines on the watch dial. And this is the reason which led to an unofficial Double Red Sea Dweller designation by watch collectors.
Coming to its specification, the watch case of the Rolex Sea Dweller 2000 has a diameter of 40.0 mm(1.57 in) and a thickness of 14.7 mm (0.58 in). And they were succeeded by the Rolex Sea Dweller 4000 (4000 ft = 1220 m) model, which came with an increased depth rating to 1,220 meters (4,000 ft). The last launched Comex Sea Dweller model of Sea Dweller was introduced at the BaselWorld watch and jewelry show in 2008, which was an updated version of the Sea Dweller model and was named the Rolex Sea Dweller Deepsea 116660. It came with an official depth rating of 3,900 meters (12,800 ft) which represented in its launch year as the most water resistant mechanical watch in its entire serial production. And for acquiring this official depth rating, the new Rolex Sea Dweller Deepsea was tested to a depth of 4,875 meters (15,994 ft) to offer the 25% safety reserve which is required by the ISO 6425 divers watches standard. And for testing the water resistance of its Sea Dweller Deepsea, the Rolex used the testing equipment which was developed for them by the Comex.
One of the major features which came with the Rolex Deepsea at the launch of 2008 was its "Ringlock System". Now, this system was used for sealing the sapphire crystal to the case, it is a case back which is made of titanium/steel alloy. And the other qualities were the "Glidelock-clasp" and diver extension link, "maxi-dial", engraved rehaut, ceramic bezel with platinum-filled numbers, calibre 3135 with antimagnetic Parachrome-Blue-hairspring and a blue "Chromalight" loom.
There are three variants of this Rolex Deepsea. The first was with the Deepsea 116660 which has a classic black dial with white text on the dial. The second variant is the "Rolex Deepsea D Blue" which was released in 2014. And the latest one was the new Rolex Deepsea model with the reference Rolex 126660 and this was recently introduced at Baselworld 2018. The Deepsea watch is equipped with the calibre 3235, a broader bracelet and resized folding clasp and has a slightly redesigned case.
Right before the 2018 model, another Sea Dweller was launched at the BaselWorld watch and jewelry show in 2017, this is where the Rolex introduced an enlarged Sea Dweller 126600, which featured a date magnifier on a redesigned watch crystal and an updated automatic movement (Calibre 3235)
Thus now go ahead and add this ultra-resistant dive watch models to your luxury watch collection which is engineered by Rolex for the conquest of the deep.
