Grand Flieger

Tutima Glashuette Grand Flieger Watches

Tutima, a German luxury watch brand, often does not get the recognition it deserves. Established in 1927, Tutima had its birthplace in Glashutte, Saxony. Currently, a registered member of the Industrie und Handelskammer Oldenburg, the brand slowly gained a reputation in the world of watchmaking from 1970. Not many people would know that Tutima issued its timepieces for military units, and the soldiers and sailors who wore the watches became sworn patrons of the brand immediately. Watch enthusiasts who had delved deeply into the history of Tutima had said that commoners rarely got to witness the brilliant craftsmanship of the brand since the models were directly handed over to the armed forces. It was on a few occasions when Tutima had decided to open its door for sale to the mass that everyone got to lay their hands on the beautiful pieces.

There are primarily 4 watch collections of Tutima - M2, Saxon One, Patria, and Grand Flieger. Each collection serves individual purposes. Whilst the Flieger Chronograph was produced especially for NATO’s operations, the Flieger Automatic catered to the requirements of aviation. Each of Tutima’s projects had been undertaken for the military, and the company had delivered them successfully.

All About Tutima Glashutte Grand Flieger Watches

Tutima Glashutte Grand Flieger: The Finest of German Horological Tradition

Even though Tutima rose to be one of the best manufacturers of mechanical watches 70 years ago, the name of Tutima died slowly with time. Reputed mainly for their aviation-based timepieces, Tutima is currently going through a transformation to make a comeback in the game. Ernest Kurtz, a young jurist, laid the foundation of the brand in Saxony city. The brand initially started with pocket watches for the army personnel at the time of the World War but shifted to high-end wristwatches soon after. By the end of the 1930s, Tutima Glashutte could compete with some of the most notable Swiss counterparts. When the two-pushers pilot chronograph was released, the German government took immediate notice and asked Tutima to supply the pieces for the ongoing war. Records say that by the end of World War II, Tutima had produced almost 30000 Flieger Chronographs, and the pilots hoarded the collection. Due to its historical significance, this timepiece still remains one of the highest-priced Swiss watches. The late 2000s marked the beginning of the Classic line of Tutima watches. This series featured several three-hand pilots, as well as, chronograph watches with coined rotating bezels. Tutima rose to fame in the years of its inception and had subdued later. However, they are planning to launch a different lineup that would grab everyone’s attention and take the company’s name to the zenith of success.

Tutima had had to go through some of the most dangerous ups and downs at the time of the World Wars. As the company survives through all, they try to sketch their story on the watches. In order to commemorate the milestones, Tutima always tries to release significant pieces at certain times or pay a tribute to the original collections through the new models. The making of the remarkable Tutima Glashutte Grand Flieger Airport Automatic has achieved the status of a legend due to its functionality and reliability. Take a look at how Tutima has meandered through ages and left the mark of struggle on its watches:

Military Chronograph

In 1985, the German government wanted the company to manufacture a military watch for the army. The Military Chronograph is a reflection of that order and varies greatly from the earlier pilot’s watch. The Chronograph was given a modern design to bear with the jet speeds and was immediately liked by the German pilots. The watch became a standard for them over time.

Tempostopp Flyback Chronograph

The old Flyback Chronograph had a tempostopp function and was hailed as one of the most famous watches produced by Glashutte at that time. The modern version is an ode to that and has the old functionalities of the original watch, but with more precision and durability. The Tutima Tempostopp screams of Tutima’s rich history and is the perfect shadow of the brand’s past and future as a reputed watchmaker.

M2

Tutima’s M2 model is an impressive take on the 1984 NATO Chronograph. When NATO had ordered Tutima to build a special watch, it included lots of specifications. The modern M2 not only includes the old features but also boasts of some high-end technicalities. The nickel-iron case prevents magnetic field streams, and the watch has professional-level durability and precision. The Tutima Glashutte M2 prides itself on a rugged and sporty look.

Hommage

This watch was launched to commemorate a historical event when Glashutte was bombed at the end of World War II. Even though scattered initially, Tutima started collecting its broken pieces and formed itself again. Hommage recalls this event and was manufactured first in 2011. The first-ever minute repeater watch was produced in Glashutte and was featured with a chime having a happy tune. The joyful acoustic signal along with the two gongs worked in favor of the watch.

The Grand Flieger Airport Automatic

Focusing mostly on the brand’s historic pilot chronograph, the Grand Flieger collection was launched. This series was not only the first flyback from Glashutte but also was a constant company for the pilots on their everyday missions. For Tutima, the war had always been a catalyst, and its repercussions can be seen largely on their watches. Designed to stand up in the toughest of scenarios, the pilot-watches had high significance during World War II. The Tutima Glashutte Grand Flieger Airport Automatic is perfect for individuals with larger wrists. Tutima has given a modern take to this timepiece so that apart from flying, it can be worn suitably during diving as well. The screw-down crown is used to operate the date and time and for winding the watch occasionally. With a bidirectional rotation, the bezel has a luminous marking that makes it possible for the owner to glance at it in complete darkness. One can choose from a stainless-steel bracelet or a leather strap, and the dial is designed in contrast with that. The dial comes in options of a Classic Blue and Military Green with a sturdy stainless-steel case that is resilient to all sorts of harsh weather conditions. The outer appearance of the Grand Fliegers consists of new features, but the watches run on automatic Caliber movements. The Grand Flieger Collection is considered one of the brand’s milestone collections and largely features the signs of the original model. If you want a pilot-style watch, there is nothing better than the Grand Flieger adorning your wrist.

Tutima’s aviation accomplishment is something worth respecting. Tutima watches continue to be popular for legit reasons for being purposeful enough. Combining both aviation and diving properties is seen rarely, and this has made the models an instant success. The handsome historic look of the watches, coupled with the incorporation of some modern features, has made Tutima a notable brand. Each item is verified before release, and experts ensure the authenticity of the brand. Watch enthusiasts savor the rich history of Tutima and testify that Tutima watches have truly stood the test of a hard time.
